Alaskan Malamutes are strong dogs that need involvement in various activities. The dog needs daily exercise and gets bored when having nothing to be busy with. Alaskan Malamutes are great diggers. They need a fenced yard to be kept in and much attention.
These dogs are often used in dog sledding. They are powerful and are always ready to work. However, Siberian Huskies seem to be more endurable. Alaskan Malamutes are good in racing for short distances. Weight pulling is also a favorite activity of the breed. Besides, Alaskan Malamutes are wonderful pack dogs. It is always fun to watch them working.
The breed is valued highly for its working qualities. The National breed club enables breeders and owners of the Alaskan Malamute to work their dogs and get certificates. The dogs that excel in weight pulling, sledding, and packing are allowed to enter the Working Dog Showcase.
To train a good working dog, breeders and owners should be really consistent. Training an Alaskan Malamute takes time and patience. Experienced owners succeed faster. The dogs are not receptive to harsh methods. Keep in mind that Alaskan Malamutes should not be trained in hot weather since they are prone to overheating.
