Alaskan Malamute Puppy

An Alaskan Malamute Puppy looks very similar to a wolf’s young. As a matter of fact, Malamutes bear a strong resemblance to wolves, and sometimes they even howl in a manner barely distinguishable from wolves’. However, they are not likely to be genetically related to wolves. Alaskan Malamutes have been by man’s side for as long as 3 millenniums, and, most interesting, haven’t changed much since olden times. These dogs are notably friendly towards people, even those they do not know. For this reason, they are no great guardians and cannot be used as watch dogs. What they are particularly adept at is pulling weight. Mahlemiut tribesmen that inhabited Alaska in ancient times (this is where the breed gets its name from), used the dog to carry heavy loads across snowy plains and mountainous terrains.

Alaskan Malamutes promptly gained popularity among settlers from Europe, and they were used extensively during the gold rush at the turn of the 20th century. This is the time when some people attempted to crossbreed the Malamute with other dogs. However, Malamutes have retained their original appearance, and so far they are considered to be one of the oldest breeds in the world. This is one of the reasons why Alaskan Malamute puppies are so popular among dog lovers in various countries.

Alaskan Malamutes are members of the Spitz group, and they have a characteristic profuse double coat, which is a great adaptation for harsh polar weather. Their double-coat has a wooly undercoat, which keeps the body warm any time. The coat comes in a variety of colors, including white, grey and white, black and white, sable and white and red and white. Malamutes have a sturdy and compact body, broad head, muscular limbs and densely coated tail, which is carried over the back. Although Alaskan Malamute Puppies look small, they grow up into large dogs, measuring 26-29 inches at the withers and weighing around 75-85 lbs.

Alaskan Malamutes are very devoted companions, and they cannot do without interaction. Being pack-oriented dogs, they appreciate the company of other dogs, usually their own breed and size. However, they can be very dog-aggressive at times, and hence they require thorough socialization. Malamutes are very communicative and do not usually exhibit distrust toward strangers. However, they should not be trusted with smaller pets, either canine or non-canine. Today, Malamutes are popular pets. Because of their dense coats, they are not well off in hot climates. Their life span averages 9-11 years. They shed their coat twice every year, which can be quite a challenge during these periods. An Alaskan Malamute Puppy can make an excellent playmate for a child, but this sort of interaction must be supervised by adults.
